Hiking Japan's Largest Active Volcano
Aso-san (阿蘇山) in Kumamoto Prefecture is an active volcano whose eruptions formed the island of Kyushu (Japan's third largest island). Soc'd! The Aso caldera is stunning, and the views from the peak over the plain below are great.

One minor point - most of Kyushu was formed by the subduction of the Philippine plate under the Eurasian plate, not by Aso's eruptions, which are relatively recent (

I have a hard time believing that Aso is bigger then Yellowstone...

That is correct. It seems that the sources out of Japan and information provided in the Kyushu area say that it is the largest, but this is apparently not true after a little googling. As to which is the biggest, that seems to depend on the source. It looks like it might be Lake Toba in Indonesia, but the size of it differs on the source. Apparently there isn't a definitive answer out there yet.
